Əlyazmanın maddi quruluşu və tarixi qatları: Müşahidədən elmi nəticəyə
“Beyin Mühəndisliyinə Qarşı Türkcə Əski Kitablar” — 516-cı bölüm
15 oktyabr 2026 — Kodikologiya dərsləri, 8-ci dərs
Əski əlyazma kitablarını araşdırarkən yalnız mətni oxumaq və onun mənasını açıqlamaq kifayət etmir. Kitabın kağızı, xətti, mürəkkəbi, dəftər quruluşu, cildi, mülkiyyət qeydləri və haşiyələrindəki yazılar da onun tarixi haqqında mühüm məlumatlar verə bilər. Lakin bu məlumatların hər birinin sübut gücü və məhdudiyyətləri fərqlidir.
Səkkizinci dərsimizdə iki əsas məsələ üzərində çalışdıq: əlyazmanın maddi quruluşundakı fərqləri necə şərh etməliyik və kitabın hazırlanma, istifadə, mülkiyyət, mətnə müdaxilə və təmir tarixini bir-birindən necə ayırmalıyıq?
Dərsin əsas prinsipi belə idi: Müşahidə etdiyimiz hər xüsusiyyətdən yalnız dəlilin imkan verdiyi qədər nəticə çıxarmalıyıq.
1. Kodikoloji vahid nədir?
Kodikologiya (Codicology) əlyazma kitabların maddi quruluşunu, hazırlanma üsullarını və fiziki tarixini araşdıran elmi sahədir.
Kodikoloji vahid (Codicological unit) isə müstəqil hazırlanma quruluşuna və istehsal tarixinə malik ola bilən maddi hissədir.
Kağızların rəngi də fərqli idi. Bununla belə, 60-cı vərəqdə yarımçıq qalan cümlə 61-ci vərəqdə davam edir və hər iki vərəqdə 15 sətir yerləşirdi.
İlk baxışda bu fərqlər iki katibin iştirakına, mətnin sonradan tamamlanmasına və ya əlyazmanın maddi quruluşunun dəyişdirilməsinə işarə edə bilərdi.
Lakin araşdırmaya yeni dəlil əlavə etdik: hər iki vərəqin eyni ilkin dəftər quruluşuna aid olduğunu göstərən məlumatlar və tikiş dəlilləri mövcud idi.
Bu yeni məlumat iki müstəqil kodikoloji vahidin sonradan birləşdirilməsi ehtimalını zəiflədir. Ancaq iki ayrı katibin eyni maddi vahid üzərində işləməsi ehtimalını aradan qaldırmır.
Beləliklə, üç ayrı məsələni fərqləndirməliyik:
Xəttin dəyişməsi.
Katibin dəyişməsi.
Kodikoloji vahidin dəyişməsi.
Bunlar bir-biri ilə əlaqəli ola bilər, lakin eyni hadisə deyildir.
Bununla yanaşı, tikişin görünüşü təkbaşına ilkin quruluşu qəti şəkildə sübut etmir. Kitab sonradan sökülüb yenidən tikilmiş ola bilər. Buna görə də dəftər quruluşunu, kağızı, vərəqlərin bir-birinə bağlanmasını və təmir izlərini birlikdə araşdırmaq lazımdır.
2. Əlyazmanın beş tarixi sahəsi
İkinci əməli təmrində 90 vərəqlik fərzi bir türkcə əlyazma üzərində çalışdıq. Əlyazmada beş ayrı müşahidə vardı:
90-cı vərəqdə 1040 hicri tarixli kolofon.
1-ci vərəqdə Əhməd ibn Mustafanın adı ilə 1100 hicri tarixli mülkiyyət qeydi.
25-ci vərəqin haşiyəsində qara mürəkkəblə yazılmış tarixsiz şərh.
40-cı vərəqdə üstündən xətt çəkilmiş bir söz və qırmızı mürəkkəblə yazılmış düzəliş.
Cilddə tarixi bilinməyən təmir izləri.
Bu müşahidələri beş elmi araşdırma sahəsinə ayırdıq:
| Elmi sahə | Araşdırma mövzusu |
|---|---|
| Hazırlanma və mətn tarixi (Production and textual history) | Kitabın nə zaman və necə hazırlandığı, mətnin yaranması və köçürülməsi |
| Mülkiyyət və intiqal tarixi (Provenance) | Kitabın sahibləri, saxlandığı yerlər və yerdəyişmələri |
| İstifadə tarixi (Use history) | Kitabın oxunması, şərh edilməsi və istifadə olunması |
| Mətn üzərində müdaxilə (Textual intervention) | Düzəlişlər, əlavələr və mətn dəyişiklikləri |
| Maddi təmir və qorunma tarixi (Conservation and repair history) | Cildin, kağızın və digər maddi hissələrin təmiri və qorunması |
Bu sahələri bir-birindən ayırmaq vacibdir. Ancaq onların arasında sərt və keçilməz sərhədlər yoxdur. Məsələn, haşiyədəki bir şərh həm istifadə tarixini, həm də mətnə sonrakı müdaxiləni aydınlaşdıra bilər.
Əsas məsələ müşahidənin hansı sahəyə daha birbaşa dəlil verdiyini müəyyənləşdirməkdir.
Yəni: “Bu nüsxənin yazılışı 1040 hicri ilində tamamlandı.”
“Bu nüsxə” ifadəsi tarixin əlimizdəki nüsxəyə aid olması ehtimalını gücləndirir. Lakin yenə də kolofonun əvvəlki bir nüsxədən olduğu kimi köçürülməsi ehtimalını nəzərdən keçirməliyik.
Əgər kolofonun məhz araşdırdığımız nüsxəyə aid olduğu etibarlı dəlillərlə təsdiqlənərsə, 1040 hicri ilini onun köçürülməsinin tamamlanma tarixi kimi qəbul edə bilərik.
Ancaq burada mühüm bir fərq vardır: tamamlanma tarixi ilə başlanğıc tarixi eyni deyil.
1040 hicri ilində tamamlandığı göstərilən bir əlyazmanın köçürülməsinə 1039-cu ildə və ya daha əvvəl başlanmış ola bilər. Katibin nə qədər fasilə verdiyini, işi hansı ayda başladığını və hansı gündə bitirdiyini bilmirik.
Hətta tamamlanma ilinin müəyyənləşdirilməsi də ayın və günün müəyyənləşdirilməsi demək deyil. 1040 hicri ilinin birinci günündə tamamlanmış nüsxə ilə həmin ilin sonuncu günündə tamamlanmış nüsxə arasında təxminən bir hicri il qədər zaman fərqi ola bilər.
Buna görə tarixi məlumatın dəqiqlik səviyyəsini də ayrıca nəzərə almalıyıq.
Beləliklə, paleoqrafik müşahidələri maddi dəlillərlə birlikdə qiymətləndirməliyik.
6. Cildin təmir tarixi
Bir məsələni də nəzərə almalıyıq: hər təmir mütləq ağır zədələnmənin nəticəsi deyil. Bəzi təmirlər qoruyucu məqsədlə aparılır.
Buna görə maddi müdaxilənin mövcudluğunu müəyyənləşdirməklə onun səbəbini və tarixini müəyyənləşdirməyi bir-birindən ayırmalıyıq.
7. Tarixi hədlər və dəlilin gücü
Onlar tarix, arxeologiya, kodikologiya və digər tarixi araşdırmalarda ortaq anlayışlar kimi istifadə olunur.
Ancaq burada bir incəliyi nəzərə almalıyıq.
Əgər hadisənin öz tarixi etibarlı dəlillərlə məlumdursa, onu yalnız iki hədd arasında yerləşdirmək lazım deyil.
Bizim fərzi nüsxəmizdə 1040 hicri ilində köçürülmənin tamamlandığı təsdiqlənərsə, bu, köçürmə hadisəsinin tarixidir.
1100 hicri tarixli mülkiyyət qeydi isə həmin nüsxənin sonrakı tarixində qeydə alınmış şahidlikdir.
8. Araşdırma üsulumuzun tənqidi dəyərləndirilməsi
Bugünkü təmrinlərdə qarşılaşdığımız əsas çətinliklərdən biri müşahidə, ehtimal və nəticəni bəzən bir-birinə yaxınlaşdırmağımız idi.
Birinci təmrində xətt və kağız fərqlərini müşahidə etdik. Lakin iki ayrı katibin olması ehtimalı ilə iki ayrı kodikoloji vahidin mövcudluğu ehtimalını dəqiq fərqləndirməyə ehtiyac yarandı.
Bu, yalnız terminoloji məsələ deyildi. Çünki iki anlayışın qarışdırılması maddi quruluş haqqında çıxardığımız nəticəni dəyişdirə bilərdi.
İkinci təmrində 1040 və 1100 hicri tarixlərini əvvəlcə əlyazmanın tarixini müəyyənləşdirən iki hədd kimi qiymətləndirməyə meyl etdik. Sonra aydınlaşdırdıq ki, köçürmənin tamamlanma tarixi ilə kitabın sonrakı mövcudluğunu göstərən mülkiyyət qeydi eyni tarixi hadisəyə aid deyil.
Bu təmrinlərdən üç mühüm tənqidi nəticə çıxardıq.
Birincisi, elmi terminləri dəqiq işlətməliyik. Kodikoloji vahid, katib, xətt, dəftər və nüsxə bir-biri ilə əlaqəli anlayışlar olsa da, eyni məna daşımır.
İkincisi, müşahidə etdiyimiz bir xüsusiyyətin bir neçə mümkün izahı ola bilər. İlk ağlımıza gələn ehtimalı sübut olunmuş həqiqət kimi qəbul etməməliyik.
Üçüncüsü, elmi ehtiyat nəticə çıxarmaqdan imtina etmək deyil. Əksinə, mövcud dəlilin nəyi təsdiqlədiyini və hansı sualları cavabsız qoyduğunu dəqiq göstərməkdir.
Bu məqsədlə əvvəlki dərslərimizdə öyrəndiyimiz dörd mərhələli araşdırma üsulunu yenidən tətbiq etdik:
Müşahidə (Observation): Nə görürük?
Ehtimal (Hypothesis): Müşahidənin hansı mümkün izahları vardır?
Dəlillə yoxlama (Evidence testing): Ehtimalları hansı maddi və mətn dəlilləri ilə sınaqdan keçirə bilərik?
Nəticə (Conclusion): Mövcud dəlillər bizə nə qədər hökm verməyə imkan yaradır?
Bu dörd mərhələni bir-birindən ayırmaq elmi araşdırmanın etibarlılığını artırır.
Nəticə
The Material Structure and Historical Layers of Manuscripts: From Observation to Scholarly Interpretation
Old Turkic Books Against Mind Engineering — Episode 516
15 October 2026 | Manuscript Studies, Lesson 8: Codicology and Palaeography
Studying an old manuscript involves much more than reading its text and interpreting its meaning. The paper, handwriting, ink, gatherings, binding, ownership inscriptions, marginal annotations, and traces of repair can all provide valuable evidence about a book's history. Yet these different kinds of evidence do not carry the same weight, nor do they necessarily answer the same historical questions.
In our eighth lesson on manuscript studies, we concentrated on two fundamental problems. First, how should we interpret differences in the physical structure of a manuscript? Second, how can we distinguish its production history from its history of use, ownership, textual intervention, and physical repair?
The guiding principle of our investigation was straightforward: we should draw conclusions only to the extent that the available evidence permits.
This principle may seem simple, but applying it consistently requires careful observation, precise terminology, and a willingness to reconsider our initial assumptions.
1. What Is a Codicological Unit?
Codicology is the study of manuscripts as physical objects. It examines their materials, construction, production techniques, and the changes they have undergone over time.
A codicological unit is a materially distinguishable part of a manuscript that may have its own history of production. A bound volume may consist of a single codicological unit, but it may also contain several units produced independently and subsequently brought together.
One of the most important distinctions we examined was that a change in handwriting, or even a change of scribe, does not necessarily indicate a change of codicological unit.
To explore this problem, we considered a hypothetical manuscript consisting of 80 folios.
The handwriting on folios 1–60 appeared to differ from that on folios 61–80. The letterforms changed, and the paper on folio 61 appeared darker than that on folio 60. Nevertheless, a sentence beginning on folio 60 continued onto folio 61, and both folios contained 15 lines of writing.
At first glance, these differences suggested several possible explanations. Two scribes might have worked on the manuscript. A single scribe might have changed writing instruments or habits. Alternatively, part of the manuscript might have been completed or replaced at a later stage.
We then introduced additional evidence: the two folios appeared to belong to the same original gathering structure, supported by evidence concerning their physical arrangement and sewing.
This new information weakened the hypothesis that the folios belonged to two independently produced codicological units subsequently joined together. It did not, however, eliminate the possibility that two scribes had worked within the same unit.
The exercise revealed three questions that must remain analytically distinct:
Has the handwriting changed?
Has the scribe changed?
Has the codicological unit changed?
These questions are related, but they are not interchangeable.
A further qualification is necessary. Evidence of sewing does not automatically establish a manuscript's original construction. A volume may have been dismantled and resewn during a later binding or restoration campaign. Consequently, gathering structure, paper characteristics, sewing evidence, and signs of repair must be examined together.
The broader lesson is that a visible difference does not explain itself. Its significance depends on the physical and textual context in which it appears.
2. Five Dimensions of Manuscript History
Our second practical exercise concerned a hypothetical 90-folio Turkish manuscript preserved in the Süleymaniye Library.
We began with five observations:
A colophon on folio 90 contained the date 1040 AH.
An ownership inscription on folio 1 contained the name Ahmad ibn Mustafa and the date 1100 AH.
An undated marginal commentary, written in black ink, appeared on folio 25.
On folio 40, a word had been crossed out and another written beside it in red ink.
The binding showed traces of repair, although the date of that work was unknown.
Our task was to identify the principal area of manuscript history to which each observation contributed.
| Area of investigation | Principal questions |
|---|---|
| Production and textual history | When and how was the manuscript produced, and what is the history of its text? |
| Provenance | Who owned the manuscript, where was it kept, and how did it circulate? |
| History of use | How was the manuscript read, studied, annotated, or otherwise used? |
| Textual intervention | What corrections, additions, or alterations were made to the text? |
| Conservation and repair history | How and when were the manuscript's physical components repaired or preserved? |
These categories are useful analytical distinctions, not completely separate compartments.
A marginal annotation, for example, may provide evidence both of a manuscript's use and of an intervention made after its main text was written. A repair may reveal something about the book's physical condition and, under certain circumstances, about its later institutional history.
The important question is not merely which category an observation belongs to, but what that observation can actually establish.
3. Does a Date in a Colophon Establish the Date of Copying?
Our hypothetical manuscript contained the date 1040 AH in its colophon.
A date recorded at the end of a manuscript is potentially important, but it cannot automatically be treated as the date on which the surviving copy was produced.
It might refer to the original composition of the work, the completion of the present copy, or the copying of an earlier exemplar. A scribe may reproduce an earlier colophon without modifying its date.
We therefore considered three possibilities:
First, 1040 AH might refer to the composition of the original work.
Second, it might record the completion of the manuscript now under examination.
Third, the date might have been transmitted from an earlier manuscript through the copying process.
To investigate these possibilities, we introduced a more explicit colophon:
«تمّت كتابة هذه النسخة في سنة ١٠٤٠»
Translated into English, this reads:
“The writing of this copy was completed in the year 1040 AH.”
The phrase hādhihi al-nuskha, meaning “this copy,” strengthens the interpretation that the date refers to the completion of a particular manuscript.
Nevertheless, the possibility remains that the wording was reproduced from an earlier exemplar.
We must therefore examine the colophon in relation to the surrounding text, handwriting, ink, paper, and any available evidence from other manuscript witnesses.
If reliable evidence establishes that the colophon refers to the surviving manuscript, 1040 AH may be accepted as its year of completion.
But even then, an important distinction remains: the date of completion is not necessarily the date on which copying began.
The scribe might have started in 1039 AH or earlier. The work may have proceeded continuously or with interruptions. We cannot determine the duration of copying simply from its recorded year of completion.
Furthermore, a year alone does not provide the month or day. A manuscript completed at the beginning of 1040 AH and one completed near the end of that year would share the same recorded date while potentially differing by almost a full lunar year.
Scholarly interpretation must respect this level of chronological uncertainty.
4. Ownership Inscriptions and the Limits of Provenance Evidence
The first folio of our hypothetical manuscript contained an ownership inscription naming Ahmad ibn Mustafa and dated 1100 AH.
If authentic and genuinely associated with the manuscript under examination, this inscription provides evidence that the volume existed in 1100 AH and was connected to Ahmad ibn Mustafa through an ownership claim.
It does not, however, establish that he acquired the book in that particular year.
He may have possessed it for some time before recording his ownership. Nor does the inscription establish that he was its first owner.
The manuscript might previously have passed through several hands. It might have travelled between cities or remained in one location. Without additional evidence, these possibilities cannot be resolved.
An ownership inscription is therefore a historical witness, not a complete account of the manuscript's circulation.
This distinction is essential to provenance research. The earliest surviving ownership record is not necessarily evidence of the earliest ownership.
Similarly, the absence of earlier inscriptions does not establish that earlier owners did not exist.
The first documented event in a manuscript's history should not be confused with the first event that actually occurred.
5. Marginal Commentary and Textual Corrections
The undated commentary on folio 25 offered another kind of evidence.
Marginal annotations may reveal how a manuscript was read, interpreted, taught, corrected, or studied. They can preserve traces of intellectual activity that are otherwise absent from the main text.
To investigate such an annotation, we would compare its handwriting with that of the main text, examining letterforms, the placement of diacritical marks, pen movement, spacing, and ink characteristics.
This is where palaeography becomes particularly important.
Palaeography studies historical handwriting, including the forms of letters and the conventions and practices of writing. It helps us identify similarities and differences between scripts and assess possible relationships between writing hands.
However, a difference in handwriting does not necessarily prove that two individuals were involved.
The same person may write differently at different times, with different pens, or under different circumstances. An attribution to a particular scribe therefore requires more than a general impression of similarity or difference.
The correction on folio 40 presented a related problem.
One word had been crossed out and another written beside it in red ink.
Several explanations were possible. The original scribe might have noticed and corrected an error during copying or subsequent review. Alternatively, a later reader or owner might have corrected the passage after comparing it with another manuscript or drawing upon personal knowledge.
The red ink alone could not establish the identity of the person responsible or the date of the intervention.
We also considered a material distinction: the apparent darkness of an ink is not identical to its viscosity or chemical composition. A darker ink cannot automatically be described as thicker.
Such conclusions would require closer material examination and, where appropriate, technical analysis.
This exercise demonstrated why palaeographical observations should be interpreted alongside physical evidence rather than in isolation.
6. The Binding as Evidence of Repair and Preservation
The final observation concerned traces of repair in the manuscript's binding.
Bindings are not merely protective covers. They can preserve evidence of a manuscript's physical history, including changes in its structure, periods of deterioration, and attempts to preserve or restore it.
In examining a repaired binding, we should consider the materials used, their thickness, colour, texture, sewing techniques, and relationship to the original construction.
For example, if an earlier binding used leather, we might investigate whether later repairs employed leather of a similar type, textile, paper, or another material.
Differences in materials and construction techniques may suggest successive interventions. They do not, by themselves, establish precise dates.
In our hypothetical case, the repair was undated. We therefore could not determine whether it occurred before or after 1100 AH, or even whether it was undertaken after the manuscript entered a modern library collection.
Another important qualification emerged: repair does not always imply severe damage.
Some interventions are preventive, intended to reinforce vulnerable structures before substantial deterioration occurs.
We must therefore distinguish the physical evidence of an intervention from assumptions about its cause, purpose, and date.
7. Chronological Limits and the Strength of Evidence
Two Latin expressions are especially important in manuscript dating and historical research:
Terminus post quem refers to the earliest chronological limit after which an event must have occurred. In other words, the event cannot have happened before that point.
Terminus ante quem refers to the latest chronological limit before which an event must have occurred. The event cannot have happened after that point.
These terms remain widely used in English-language scholarship, particularly in history, archaeology, codicology, and related disciplines.
Their purpose is to express chronological limits precisely when the exact date of an event is unknown.
However, if an event's date is independently established, we should not reduce it unnecessarily to a broad interval.
In our hypothetical manuscript, if the colophon is shown to refer to the surviving copy, its completion in 1040 AH is a dated event.
The ownership inscription of 1100 AH documents a later stage in the manuscript's history.
There are 60 Hijri years between the two recorded dates, but that interval does not tell us where the manuscript was kept, how many people owned it, who read it, or what alterations it underwent.
The ownership inscription does not make the completion date more precise. Instead, it provides evidence of the manuscript's continued existence at a later point.
This distinction helped us avoid a common error: treating two dates associated with a manuscript as though they necessarily define the beginning and end of the same historical process.
They may instead document entirely different events.
8. A Critical Assessment of Our Research Method
The exercises revealed several difficulties that deserve particular attention.
The first concerned terminology.
In the initial exercise, we had to distinguish differences in handwriting from differences in scribal identity and codicological structure. Confusing these categories could lead to an incorrect interpretation of how the manuscript was assembled.
The second difficulty concerned the relationship between observation and inference.
A difference in paper colour is observable. The claim that two independently produced units were later joined together is an interpretation that requires further evidence.
Similarly, an ownership inscription dated 1100 AH is an observable feature. The claim that the manuscript changed owners in precisely that year is a hypothesis, not an established fact.
The third difficulty concerned chronological reasoning.
At first, the dates 1040 and 1100 AH might appear to establish a convenient historical interval for the manuscript. Closer examination shows that they refer to potentially different events: completion of copying and a later ownership record.
This required us to reconsider the meaning of chronological boundaries and the distinction between a dated event and evidence of subsequent existence.
From these difficulties, we drew three methodological conclusions.
First, scholarly terminology must be used precisely. Terms such as scribe, handwriting, gathering, manuscript witness, and codicological unit refer to related but distinct concepts.
Second, an observation may support several competing hypotheses. We should not elevate the first plausible explanation into an established historical conclusion.
Third, scholarly caution is not the refusal to reach conclusions. It is the discipline of stating clearly what the evidence establishes, what it suggests, and what remains unknown.
To apply these principles consistently, we returned to the four-stage method developed in our earlier lessons:
Observation: What can we actually see?
Hypothesis: What possible explanations account for the observation?
Evidence testing: What material or textual evidence could support or challenge each explanation?
Conclusion: What can we reasonably establish on the basis of the available evidence?
The strength of this method lies in keeping these stages distinct while allowing each to inform the next.
It also encourages intellectual flexibility. A new observation may strengthen one hypothesis, weaken another, or require us to reconsider the question itself.
This is not a weakness in the research process. It is how historical interpretation becomes more reliable.
Conclusion
Our eighth lesson reinforced a central principle of manuscript studies: a manuscript is not simply a text preserved on paper. It is a material object with a history that may extend across centuries.
Its production, copying, reading, ownership, annotation, correction, binding, and repair may belong to different periods and involve different individuals.
Each stage can leave traces, but those traces do not automatically form a complete historical narrative.
Our responsibility as researchers is to distinguish these layers, investigate their relationships, and reconstruct their sequence only where the evidence permits.
Learning codicology and palaeography therefore involves more than memorising technical terminology. It requires the ability to observe carefully, formulate alternative explanations, test them against material and textual evidence, and communicate conclusions with appropriate precision.
Perhaps the most valuable lesson was that scholarly progress does not always begin with discovering new information. Sometimes it begins with asking a more precise question about evidence already before us.
In future lessons, we intend to apply this method to actual Turkish manuscripts, examining their physical structures, textual histories, ownership records, and successive interventions.
Our long-term aim is to develop the knowledge and practical judgement necessary to investigate historical manuscripts independently, systematically, and with scholarly rigour.
