5. Ortak Hatalar ve Nüshaların Şeceresi
Dersimizin temel konularından biri, nüshalar arasındaki tarihî ve metinsel ilişkilerin araştırılmasıydı.
Bu ilişkileri incelemek amacıyla dört varsayımsal nüshayı karşılaştırdık.
| Nüsha | İstinsah tarihi | İncelenen 20 ortak hatadan kaçını taşıyor? |
|---|---|---|
| A | Bilinmiyor | 0 |
| H | 1050 | 18 |
| B | 1080 | 20 |
| C | 1120 | 20 |
Bu örnekte B ve C nüshaları aynı 20 hatayı taşımaktadır. H nüshasında bu hatalardan 18'i bulunurken A nüshasında söz konusu 20 hata görülmemektedir.
8. Metindeki Eksiklik Her Zaman Dikkatsizlikten Kaynaklanmaz
Oysa söz konusu hatalar, A nüshasından sonraki bir ara nüshada ortaya çıkmış olabilir.
From Evidence to Conclusions in Historical Manuscript Research
A Critical and Educational Study of Paleography, Codicology, Textual Criticism, and Manuscript Genealogy
Program 518 — Lesson 9
October 17, 2026
Introduction
Studying historical manuscripts involves much more than deciphering old handwriting, identifying unfamiliar words, or translating texts into modern languages. It requires examining historical evidence, investigating relationships between manuscript witnesses, identifying scribal interventions, and understanding how texts changed during centuries of transmission.
The central objective of our ninth lesson was therefore broader than establishing the date of a particular manuscript. We sought to develop a fundamental research skill: distinguishing observation from hypothesis, hypothesis from evidence, and evidence from conclusion.
To explore this principle, we worked through a series of hypothetical exercises involving paleography, codicology, philology, and textual criticism.
Each exercise introduced a different methodological problem. Through discussion and critical evaluation, we learned that scientific inquiry requires more than listing possible explanations. We must also determine which hypotheses are better supported by the available evidence.
1. Dating a Manuscript: A Written Date Is Not Necessarily the Date of the Surviving Copy
The presence of a date in a manuscript does not necessarily establish when the surviving physical copy was produced.
For example, suppose a manuscript contains the date 1034 in its final scribal statement, commonly known as a colophon.
This date might indicate when the surviving manuscript was copied. However, the scribe may have reproduced the colophon of an earlier exemplar without distinguishing the original statement from the circumstances of the new copy.
In that case, the date would refer to an earlier manuscript rather than the surviving witness.
Consequently, manuscript dating requires the examination of multiple forms of evidence, including handwriting, paper, ink, quire structure, and the relationship between the colophon and the surrounding text.
The fundamental methodological lesson is straightforward:
The presence of a written date is an observation. Identifying that date as the production date of the surviving manuscript is a hypothesis that requires verification.
2. Paper and Watermarks: Understanding the Limits of Material Evidence
Paper characteristics and watermarks are important sources of evidence in codicological research.
Suppose the watermark in a manuscript resembles marks found in documents dated between 1080 and 1100.
This similarity may help establish a possible chronological framework for the paper. However, it does not prove that the manuscript itself was copied during those years.
Paper could have been manufactured earlier, stored for some time, and used considerably later.
Furthermore, similar watermark designs do not necessarily indicate production from the same mould.
Watermark comparisons must therefore be considered alongside other material and historical evidence.
A watermark can support a dating hypothesis, but it rarely establishes an exact manuscript production date on its own.
3. One Manuscript, One Scribe—or Several?
Another issue examined during the lesson concerned differences in handwriting within a single manuscript.
Imagine a manuscript consisting of 100 folios. The handwriting in the first 60 folios appears different from that in the remaining 40.
At first glance, this might suggest that two scribes participated in its production.
However, differences in handwriting do not automatically establish the presence of multiple scribes.
The same person may write differently at different times or under different working conditions. Changes in pens, ink, writing speed, fatigue, and other circumstances can affect the appearance of a manuscript.
A careful investigation should therefore compare letterforms, stroke direction, pen movement, writing rhythm, line arrangement, ink characteristics, paper, and quire structure.
Paleographical and codicological evidence must be examined together.
The educational principle is clear:
Differences in handwriting are observable facts. The conclusion that two scribes produced the manuscript requires additional evidence.
4. Different Spellings of the Same Word: Error, Dialect, or Scribal Practice?
The lesson also addressed variation in the spelling of individual words.
A scribe may write the same word in several different ways, sometimes even on a single page.
This phenomenon is particularly relevant to historical Turkic manuscripts written in the Arabic script.
For example, words corresponding to the modern Turkic forms oldu (“became” or “happened”) and öldü (“died”) may present difficulties of interpretation depending on their spelling, grammatical context, and the linguistic conventions of the manuscript.
Three distinct questions must be considered:
How is the word actually written in the manuscript?
How should it be read in its grammatical and semantic context?
Does the spelling reflect the author’s language, the scribe’s practice, or an earlier stage of textual transmission?
Different spellings do not necessarily represent errors.
They may reflect orthographic conventions, dialectal variation, historical linguistic developments, or the educational background of the scribe.
It would therefore be methodologically unsound to determine the date of a manuscript or identify its scribe solely from a small number of spelling variations.
An additional distinction is equally important: the linguistic age of a text is not necessarily the age of the surviving physical manuscript.
A later scribe may preserve linguistic and orthographic features inherited from a much earlier exemplar.
5. Shared Errors and the Genealogy of Manuscripts
One of the central topics of our lesson was the reconstruction of relationships between manuscript witnesses.
To investigate this problem, we considered four hypothetical manuscripts:
| Manuscript | Copying date | Number of the 20 shared errors present |
|---|---|---|
| A | Unknown | 0 |
| H | 1050 | 18 |
| B | 1080 | 20 |
| C | 1120 | 20 |
In this example, manuscripts B and C contain the same 20 errors.
Manuscript H contains 18 of those errors, while manuscript A contains none of the 20 errors under examination.
At first glance, the agreement between B and C might suggest that they derive from a common source.
However, the number of shared errors alone is insufficient to establish a manuscript genealogy.
For example, 20 spelling differences produced by a single orthographic convention should not necessarily be treated as 20 independent pieces of genealogical evidence.
Conversely, two manuscripts sharing an unusual and complex error may provide stronger evidence of a common textual ancestor than numerous ordinary spelling similarities.
The central question is:
Could these errors have arisen independently, or do they indicate a shared source of textual transmission?
Before answering, we must establish that the relevant readings are genuinely erroneous rather than legitimate textual variants.
We must also examine whether the same errors could plausibly have arisen independently.
In textual criticism, distinctive shared errors may serve as conjunctive errors: evidence supporting a genealogical relationship between witnesses.
Their significance depends not merely on their number but also on their nature and the likelihood of independent occurrence.
6. An Older Manuscript Is Not Necessarily the Direct Source of a Later One
In our hypothetical example, manuscript H was dated to 1050, manuscript B to 1080, and manuscript C to 1120.
The earlier date of H does not prove that B and C were copied directly from it.
All three manuscripts might descend through different lines from an older common ancestor.
Alternatively, a scribe may have consulted several exemplars while producing a new manuscript.
Such a process can create complex patterns of textual transmission that cannot be adequately represented by a simple family tree.
In textual criticism, the use of multiple exemplars is often discussed under the concept of contamination.
The important methodological distinction is that the physical date of a manuscript and its position within the textual genealogy are not the same thing.
A later manuscript may preserve an older reading, while an earlier manuscript may contain innovations or errors absent from later witnesses.
Consequently, chronological priority does not automatically establish textual authority.
7. The Omission of the Same Seven Words in Two Manuscripts
Our eighth scientific exercise introduced a more specific problem.
We assumed that manuscripts B and C both omitted the same seven words from the middle of a sentence.
Those seven words were present in manuscripts A and H.
We also assumed that the words immediately preceding and following the omission did not provide an obvious explanation based on the scribe’s eye skipping between similar expressions.
Such eye-skipping errors can occur when a copyist moves unintentionally from one similar word or phrase to another, leaving out the intervening text.
However, in our hypothetical case, no clear indication of this mechanism was present.
The identical omission in B and C therefore strengthened the hypothesis that the two manuscripts inherited the omission from a common textual source.
The independent omission of exactly the same seven words at exactly the same location appeared less plausible.
Nevertheless, this does not prove that B and C were copied directly from the same physical intermediate manuscript.
They might belong to a broader textual branch in which the omission had already become established.
The exercise also highlighted an important distinction:
An omission in a text is not the same as a blank space on a manuscript page.
A scribe may omit several words and continue writing without leaving any visible gap.
Conversely, an actual blank space may indicate that the scribe encountered an uncertain or unreadable passage and intended to return to it later.
These possibilities must be distinguished through examination of the manuscript itself.
8. Omissions Are Not Always Accidental
During the critical discussion, we considered another important possibility: a scribe may deliberately alter a text.
Such interventions may be motivated by literary, religious, political, or ideological considerations.
For example, a scribe might remove seven words that conflict with a particular interpretation and then modify the surrounding sentence to produce a coherent alternative reading.
The resulting sentence might remain grammatically correct and meaningful while conveying a different intellectual or ideological position.
This possibility is especially relevant when studying historical, religious, political, and literary manuscripts.
However, methodological caution is essential.
The omission of a politically or religiously significant expression does not, by itself, prove that the omission was ideologically motivated.
Such an interpretation requires additional evidence.
Researchers should examine other alterations in the same manuscript, compare parallel passages, investigate the historical context, and consider the scribal environment.
A crucial distinction must therefore be maintained:
Identifying what changed in a text is one research problem. Establishing why it changed is another.
The first concerns textual evidence and transmission.
The second involves historical interpretation, intention, and context.
Neither question should be answered more confidently than the evidence permits.
9. Critical Reflection: Recognizing Errors in Our Own Research
This lesson was not only about manuscripts. It was also an exercise in examining our own research methods.
At several points, we encountered the danger of treating a plausible hypothesis as an established conclusion.
For example, we initially considered whether the presence of a sentence in manuscript C, combined with its absence from manuscript B, demonstrated that the scribe of C must have consulted another source.
Further analysis revealed several alternative explanations.
Manuscript C might have been copied from a different exemplar. The sentence might have been added later. Alternatively, the scribe might have consulted multiple sources.
The methodological problem was not that the original hypothesis was unreasonable.
The problem was the possibility of treating one reasonable explanation as the only explanation.
Another example concerned manuscript A.
Because A contained none of the 20 shared errors found in B and C, we initially considered whether it could be excluded as their ancestor.
However, the errors might have arisen in an intermediate manuscript copied from A.
Thus, the absence of these errors in A does not exclude its possible place among the ancestors of the later textual tradition.
At the same time, because the physical date of A is unknown, we cannot establish that the surviving manuscript A itself predates B and C.
These corrections illustrate an essential principle of scholarly inquiry:
Recognizing and correcting an error in reasoning is not a failure of research. It is part of the process through which research becomes more rigorous.
Critical scholarship requires us to question our own assumptions as carefully as we question the interpretations of others.
10. A Four-Stage Model for Manuscript Research
One of the most important educational outcomes of the lesson was the application of a four-stage research model.
Stage One: Observation
We begin by recording what can actually be observed.
For example:
Manuscripts B and C lack the same seven words.
At this stage, we do not claim to know why the words are missing.
Stage Two: Hypothesis
We develop possible explanations.
For example:
B and C may have inherited the omission from a common textual ancestor.
An alternative hypothesis is that two scribes omitted the same passage independently.
Stage Three: Evidence
We examine the evidence relevant to each hypothesis.
We compare the exact boundaries of the omission, investigate possible mechanisms of scribal error, examine the grammatical and semantic context, and compare the readings preserved in other manuscripts.
The purpose is not merely to find evidence supporting a preferred explanation.
We must also look for evidence that might weaken or contradict it.
Stage Four: Conclusion
Finally, we formulate a conclusion proportionate to the strength of the evidence.
For example:
The identical omission in B and C provides significant support for their membership in a common textual branch. However, the available evidence does not establish that they were copied directly from the same surviving or lost physical exemplar.
This four-stage model is useful not only in manuscript studies but also in historical research, philology, literary criticism, and other disciplines that depend on the interpretation of incomplete evidence.
11. Evaluating the Learning Process
An important achievement of our ninth lesson was the transition from identifying possible explanations to evaluating their relative evidential strength.
In the earlier exercises, our attention focused primarily on recognizing alternative hypotheses.
In the later exercises, we began asking a more demanding question:
Which explanation is better supported by the available evidence, and why?
The example of the seven-word omission was particularly instructive.
We considered why a shared-source hypothesis might be stronger than an independent-error hypothesis when two manuscripts contain an identical and unusual omission.
At the same time, we recognized that stronger evidence does not necessarily amount to absolute proof.
The task of the researcher is therefore not simply to produce explanations but to evaluate their strengths, weaknesses, and limitations.
We also learned the importance of distinguishing hypothetical teaching examples from actual manuscript evidence.
In real research, conclusions must be grounded in the examination of surviving witnesses, their textual readings, physical characteristics, and historical contexts.
A hypothetical exercise may demonstrate a valid method, but it cannot establish a historical fact about a manuscript that has not been examined.
Conclusion
In the ninth lesson of Program 518, we explored several fundamental problems in the study of historical manuscripts.
These included manuscript dating, paper and watermarks, handwriting variation, scribal identification, orthographic practices, shared errors, manuscript genealogy, and textual omissions.
Our discussions demonstrated that no single feature should be evaluated in isolation from its textual and historical context.
A colophon date, watermark, handwriting difference, or shared error may provide an important starting point.
However, reliable scholarly conclusions require the comparison of multiple forms of evidence and the careful examination of alternative explanations.
The central lesson of our study can be expressed in one principle:
The purpose of scholarly research is not to provide an immediate and definitive answer to every question. It is to determine which conclusions can be supported by which evidence, and with what degree of confidence.
In future lessons, we intend to apply these methods to the reading, comparison, and critical examination of historical manuscripts.
The study of manuscripts advances not only through the discovery of new information but also through a disciplined understanding of the limits of what that information allows us to conclude.
