Tarih: Sultan Mustafa'dan Sultan Murad'a
Bugünkü okumanın en önemli sonuçlarından biri, metinde tarihsel işaretler bulmamızdı.
Mukaddimede Sultan Mustafa'nın ikinci defa tahta çıkmasından ve hicri 1031 yılından söz edilmektedir. Bu bilgi, tarihsel bakımdan I. Mustafa'nın ikinci saltanatıyla örtüşmektedir.

In Search of a Manuscript of the Story of Joseph: Scholarly Findings from a Four-Hour Reading Session
Introduction
In today's program, we spent approximately four hours reading and examining an early Ottoman Turkish manuscript devoted to the story of the Prophet Joseph (Yusuf).
Our objective was not merely to decipher the text. We also sought to investigate the manuscript's physical structure, handwriting, authorship, translation history, historical context, and intellectual purpose.
During this session, we explored several aspects of manuscript studies, including paleography, codicology, textual interpretation, and historical analysis. However, we did not have sufficient time to compare the manuscript systematically with other surviving copies or to establish a critical edition.
The findings presented here should therefore be regarded as the preliminary results of an ongoing scholarly investigation rather than definitive conclusions.
1. Physical and Paleographic Characteristics of the Manuscript
Our examination of selected folios revealed the use of both black and red ink. Section headings, chapter divisions, and certain expressions were distinguished through rubrication.
In several places, traces of black writing appeared beneath or around the red ink. This observation raises the possibility that some headings were written in black before being reinforced or overwritten in red.
However, we cannot yet determine whether this process occurred immediately after the relevant passages were copied, after the completion of individual sections, or during a later stage of manuscript production.
We also observed several distinctive features of the handwriting: closely connected letters, omitted diacritical dots, ambiguous word boundaries, variations in pen thickness, and changes in the direction of certain lines.
Particular attention was given to the different forms of the Arabic-script letters kāf, mīm, yāʾ, shīn, and lām. Marginal annotations and possible corrections were also examined.
These features are important for understanding the manuscript's writing practices and resolving difficult readings.
Nevertheless, methodological caution is necessary. Missing diacritical dots cannot automatically be attributed to hurried writing, nor can differences in stroke thickness establish the involvement of multiple scribes.
Such conclusions require more detailed paleographic and material examination.
2. Questions of Authorship, Sources, and Translation
One of the most significant discoveries emerged from the manuscript's introduction, where we encountered the names “Altıparmak” and “Muhammad ibn Muhammad.”
These references suggest a possible connection between the Turkish author or translator and the historical figure known as Altıparmak Mehmed Efendi.
However, this identification remains provisional and must be verified through independent historical and bibliographical evidence.
The manuscript explicitly refers to the translation of an earlier work into Turkish. It also mentions the name of a source author and the title of a treatise, although the precise readings of some names and expressions remain uncertain.
In later sections, we encountered references to Imam al-Ghazali and to translation from Persian into Turkish.
These references raise the possibility that the Turkish work drew upon more than one textual source.
Yet the mention of al-Ghazali does not, by itself, establish that the entire manuscript was translated directly from a work written by him.
An important question therefore remains unresolved: Is this manuscript a relatively faithful translation, an annotated translation, an adaptation, or a compilation incorporating material from several earlier works?
Answering this question will require identifying the source texts and comparing their contents with the Turkish manuscript.
3. Historical Evidence: From Sultan Mustafa to Sultan Murad
Among the most important findings of our reading were several internal chronological references.
In the introduction, we encountered a reference to Sultan Mustafa's second accession to the Ottoman throne, associated with the year 1031 AH.
This corresponds historically to the second reign of Sultan Mustafa I, which began in 1622.
Another passage suggests that the translation was begun during Ramadan.
In the concluding section, or khatima, we identified a date that may correspond to 1033 AH.
If these readings are confirmed, they suggest the possibility that the translation began in 1031 AH (1622) and was completed, revised, or otherwise committed to writing around 1033 AH (1623–1624).
Elsewhere, the text contains an expression that we read as:
“Our present sovereign, Sultan Murad Khan.”
This reference suggests a possible connection with the reign of Sultan Murad IV, who ruled from 1623 to 1640.
Taken together, these chronological indications point toward the first half of the seventeenth century as a particularly important period in the history of the Turkish text.
Nevertheless, three distinct chronological questions must be kept separate:
The date of an event mentioned in the text, the date of the work's composition or translation, and the date on which the surviving manuscript was copied.
These dates need not coincide.
Consequently, the proposed chronology remains a working hypothesis until the relevant passages and their manuscript context have been verified.
4. Egypt, Istanbul, and the Author's Biography
The manuscript also contains geographical references that may contribute to reconstructing the author's or translator's life.
We encountered references to Egypt and a place that may be identifiable as Fayyum.
In the later sections, the speaker appears to describe his own scholarly and religious activities.
According to our preliminary reading, he refers to approximately twelve years of preaching and teaching in Istanbul and more than forty years of religious instruction in Egypt.
If these readings prove accurate, they would constitute valuable autobiographical evidence.
They might also help clarify the author's intellectual environment, professional activities, and geographical movements.
However, several questions remain open.
We must determine whether these statements belong to the Turkish translator or were reproduced from an earlier source. We must also verify the numerical expressions and establish whether the periods mentioned were consecutive or overlapping.
Only then can these details be used confidently in a biographical reconstruction.
5. The Story of Joseph as a Vehicle for Political and Moral Instruction
One of the most striking characteristics of the manuscript is its treatment of the story of Joseph as a means of discussing justice, political authority, moral responsibility, and public administration.
The author begins by emphasizing the value of knowledge and wisdom.
He then presents the narratives of earlier communities and prophets as sources of moral reflection.
Within this framework, the story of Joseph becomes more than a historical or religious narrative. It functions as an instrument of ethical instruction.
A particularly significant passage discusses the expression:
Al-sulṭān ẓill Allāh — “The ruler is the shadow of God.”
Rather than interpreting this expression as an unconditional justification of political power, the text explains it through the metaphor of protection.
Just as people seek relief beneath a shadow, the poor and vulnerable should find security under the protection of a ruler.
The author then advances an important qualification: a ruler who practices oppression cannot properly fulfill the moral meaning of being God's shadow.
This passage can be understood as an argument that political authority carries ethical obligations.
It does not necessarily amount to a theory of the legal removal of an unjust sovereign. Nevertheless, it establishes justice and protection of the vulnerable as essential standards by which rulership should be evaluated.
6. Corruption and Bribery as Central Political Concerns
The manuscript's criticism of bribery is among its most direct and forceful elements.
The author describes a society in which bribery has become habitual, moral instruction has lost much of its effectiveness, and those who oppose corruption encounter hostility.
One particularly revealing statement may be translated as:
“For bribery is the cause of the world's ruin.”
This formulation gives corruption a significance extending beyond individual wrongdoing.
Bribery is presented as a destructive force affecting social order, public morality, and the relationship between rulers and their subjects.
The author also expresses the hope that the reigning sovereign will reflect upon these lessons.
This is an important finding because it demonstrates that the political and ethical significance of the work is not merely imposed by modern interpretation.
The text itself explicitly connects moral instruction with the responsibilities of political authority.
At the same time, we must avoid assuming that every criticism refers to a particular historical official or incident.
Such identifications require additional evidence.
7. The Responsibility of Ministers and Advisers
In the fifty-eighth section, the manuscript introduces a prophetic tradition concerning the qualities of a trustworthy minister.
The tradition begins:
Idhā arāda Allāhu bi-amīrin khayran, jaʿala lahu wazīra ṣidqin.
Its meaning is:
“When God intends good for a ruler, He grants him a truthful minister.”
The accompanying explanation emphasizes the minister's responsibility to remind the ruler when he forgets and to warn him when he becomes negligent.
This passage offers a significant conception of political counsel.
A good minister is not merely someone who obeys the ruler's commands. He must also possess the integrity to identify mistakes and provide corrective advice.
Read alongside the preceding discussion of oppression and bribery, this section reveals a coherent concern with the ethical responsibilities of both sovereigns and their advisers.
It also strengthens the possibility that the work belongs, at least in part, to the broader tradition of Islamic political and ethical advice literature.
8. The Conclusion and the Identity of the Copyist
The final pages contain important statements concerning the circumstances in which the work was written.
The author refers to old age, declining physical strength, and difficulties in writing.
He also requests that learned readers examine the work fairly, correct its errors, and remember him in their prayers.
These statements are valuable because they reveal the author's awareness of the limitations of his own work and his expectation that later scholars might improve it.
However, a distinction must be maintained between an author's statement that he wrote or compiled a work and the physical production of the surviving manuscript.
A later copyist could have reproduced the author's original concluding remarks.
In the final scribal record, we read a name that appears to be:
al-Hajj Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn Muhammad.
This provides an important clue concerning the identity of the copyist.
Nevertheless, the date recorded in the colophon has not yet been established with sufficient certainty.
Further examination is required before assigning a definitive date to the surviving manuscript.
9. Critical Assessment of Our Research
The principal strength of our four-hour investigation was its effort to connect evidence found in different parts of the manuscript.
Rather than treating individual passages in isolation, we compared the chronological information in the introduction with references to Ottoman rulers, autobiographical statements, political discussions, and the concluding scribal record.
This approach enabled us to formulate several new research questions concerning authorship, translation, chronology, and intellectual history.
However, our investigation also revealed important limitations.
Several names, dates, geographical references, and difficult expressions remain uncertain.
The precise relationship between the Turkish text and its Arabic or Persian sources has not been established.
Furthermore, we have not yet undertaken a systematic comparison of surviving manuscript witnesses.
This last limitation is particularly significant.
Without examining other copies, we cannot reliably distinguish every scribal error from an authorial reading, reconstruct the textual transmission, or determine the extent to which individual passages were altered during copying.
A critical edition would require a systematic record of textual variants, corrections, omissions, additions, and differences in the organization of the work.
Our present study should therefore be understood as a preliminary investigation that establishes questions and identifies evidence for subsequent research.
Conclusion
Our four-hour reading demonstrated that this Ottoman Turkish manuscript of the story of Joseph deserves attention not only as a religious narrative or translated literary work, but also as a historical source for the study of political ethics, religious learning, and Ottoman intellectual culture.
Its discussions of justice, bribery, political authority, moral counsel, and the responsibilities of ministers reveal an intellectual purpose extending beyond the narration of Joseph's life.
The chronological references to Sultan Mustafa and Sultan Murad, together with the possible autobiographical information and the final scribal record, offer promising avenues for reconstructing the work's history.
Nevertheless, these findings must be tested through more precise transcription, bibliographical investigation, source comparison, and manuscript collation.
Our central conclusion is that this Turkish manuscript of the story of Joseph is potentially a valuable witness to the intersection of religious interpretation, moral instruction, and political criticism in the Ottoman world of the seventeenth century.
The present investigation does not mark the completion of our research. Rather, it represents an initial scholarly step toward identifying the work's sources, establishing its textual history, and eventually preparing a critical edition.
