Beyin Mühendisliğine Karşı Türkçe Eski Kitaplar

523. Bölüm – 11. Ders

7. Nüshalar Arasındaki Farklı Okunuşlar

Dersimizin ikinci önemli bölümünde metin tenkidine geçtik.

Bir eserin farklı nüshalarında aynı yerde görülen değişik okunuşları karşılaştırdık.

Variant Reading

Haşiyede Kur'an'ın Hicr suresinin 42. ayetinden şu ifade yer almaktadır:

10. Sittînü'l-Besâtîn'in Siyasi ve Toplumsal İçeriği Üzerine Yeni Bir Araştırma Sorusu

On birinci dersimizde yazma eserlerin tarihlendirilmesi ile metin tenkidinin birbirinden ayrı, fakat yakından ilişkili araştırma alanları olduğunu gördük.

Against Brain Engineering: Reading Old Turkic Books

Episode 523 — Lesson 11

Dating Historical Manuscripts: Colophons, Textual Variants, and the Political Dimensions of Qur’anic Interpretation

In the 523rd episode of our ongoing research program, Against Brain Engineering: Reading Old Turkic Books, we devoted our eleventh lesson to the dating of historical manuscripts, the interpretation of colophons, the comparison of textual witnesses, and the principles of textual criticism.

Our practical work drew primarily on Sittīn al-Basātīn, an Ottoman Turkish manuscript that we had begun examining in an earlier session.

The central question guiding our lesson was straightforward but methodologically demanding: How can we establish when a work was composed, when a surviving manuscript was copied, and what changes its text may have undergone during transmission?

As our discussion developed, we also encountered a broader question concerning the intellectual purpose of the work. Could a text presented as an interpretation of the Qur’an also communicate the political, social, and ethical concerns of its author or translator?

This question emerged from our manuscript reading rather than from a predetermined interpretation. It therefore remains a hypothesis to be tested against the textual evidence.

1. Distinguishing Composition from Manuscript Production

Our first task was to distinguish the date of a work’s composition from the date of a surviving manuscript.

A composition date refers to the period during which an author produced a text. Even this may involve several stages: initial drafting, revision, expansion, and final completion.

A manuscript’s copying date, by contrast, concerns the production of a particular physical witness.

These dates may be separated by decades or centuries.

In the introduction to Sittīn al-Basātīn, we identified a statement indicating that the author began composing the work in Fayyum, Egypt, at the beginning of Ramadan 1031 AH.

The colophon of the manuscript under examination appears to record 1109 AH.

The difference between these dates is 78 Hijri years.

This discrepancy is not inherently problematic. A manuscript copied in 1109 AH could transmit a work originally composed in 1031 AH.

However, another possibility must also be considered: a copyist may have reproduced the colophon of an earlier manuscript, including its date and other details.

Consequently, a date recorded in a colophon cannot automatically be treated as the production date of the surviving physical manuscript.

2. The Author’s Closing Remarks and the Copyist’s Colophon

During our examination of the manuscript’s final page, we distinguished two sections that serve different functions.

The first contains the author’s closing remarks, or explicit.

In the passage we read, the author refers to the circumstances of writing and requests that learned readers examine the work fairly, correct any errors, and remember him in their prayers.

The second section contains the colophon, which records information associated with the copying of the manuscript.

This distinction is essential.

An author’s concluding remarks may be transmitted from one manuscript to another as part of the literary work itself. A colophon may provide information about the production of a particular copy, but it too can be inherited from an earlier exemplar.

We also observed that the handwriting of the main text and that of the colophon appeared similar.

This similarity may suggest that both were written by the same scribe. Nevertheless, a reliable conclusion would require a systematic comparison of letterforms, pen movements, spacing, ink, and other paleographic features.

Even if the same hand produced both sections, the historical information in the colophon would still require independent verification.

This led us to an important methodological distinction: the physical authenticity of a colophon is not necessarily equivalent to the historical accuracy of the information it contains.

3. Handwriting, Regional Traditions, and Paleographic Dating

We next examined the contribution of paleography to manuscript dating.

Handwriting traditions can vary across periods, regions, institutions, and individual scribes.

For example, manuscript production in Tabriz, Ardabil, Qom, Tehran, Isfahan, and other centers may exhibit distinctive conventions.

Yet regional variation should not be interpreted mechanically.

A scribe working in one city may have been trained elsewhere. Another may preserve the spelling and linguistic features of an earlier exemplar. Different genres may also encourage different writing practices.

Our observations focused on several features:

  • The formation and connection of individual letters.

  • The speed and direction of pen movements.

  • The compression or separation of words.

  • The alignment and inclination of written lines.

  • The placement and appearance of vowel marks.

  • Variations in ink and pen-stroke thickness.

In Sittīn al-Basātīn, we encountered passages in which words appeared tightly connected, making their separation and interpretation difficult.

This may indicate rapid writing, although it could equally reflect the scribe’s habitual style.

We therefore concluded that handwriting is an important chronological indicator but rarely provides sufficient evidence for a precise date on its own.

4. Historical References and Chronological Boundaries

Historical references within a text may help establish chronological limits.

A manuscript may mention a ruler, scholar, political event, or institutional development. Such references can be useful, but their significance depends on context.

The mention of a historical figure does not prove that the author was writing during that individual’s lifetime.

For example, a text referring to al-Ghazali may have been composed centuries after his death.

Conversely, a reference to a securely dated event may establish that a particular passage could not have been written before that event occurred.

We examined two fundamental chronological concepts.

Terminus post quem refers to the earliest possible date after which a text, passage, or manuscript could have originated.

Terminus ante quem refers to the latest possible date by which a text or manuscript must already have existed.

An important qualification emerged from our discussion.

If a work mentions an event that occurred in 920 AH, the passage describing that event cannot ordinarily have been written before 920 AH.

However, an earlier version of the work may have existed before that date, with the historical reference added during a later revision.

Thus, a chronological boundary may apply to a particular textual layer rather than to the entire composition.

This distinction is especially relevant when investigating works that may have undergone multiple stages of authorial revision.

5. Paper, Watermarks, and the Date of Copying

Another major subject was the relationship between the date of paper production and the date of manuscript copying.

Watermarks can provide useful evidence concerning the production and circulation of paper.

However, the date of paper manufacture is not necessarily the date on which a manuscript was written.

Paper could remain unused for years before being employed by a scribe.

We considered hypothetical examples in which a manuscript’s colophon appeared to conflict with the chronology suggested by its watermark.

Suppose a colophon records 1050 AH, while the watermark closely resembles examples associated with paper produced between 1080 and 1100 AH.

If independent evidence establishes that the paper could not have existed before 1080 AH, the manuscript could not have been written on that paper in 1050 AH.

Nevertheless, a resemblance between watermarks does not automatically establish an exact manufacturing date.

The researcher must compare dimensions, design, chain lines, placement, and securely dated reference examples.

A chronological discrepancy therefore requires investigation rather than an immediate accusation of error or falsification.

6. Ownership Records as Historical Evidence

We also examined the chronological value of ownership inscriptions.

In one hypothetical exercise, a manuscript contained an ownership note dated 1120 AH.

If the note is authentic, correctly dated, and demonstrably belongs to the surviving manuscript, it establishes that the manuscript existed no later than 1120 AH.

It does not, however, establish the exact date of composition or copying.

This distinction helped us recognize that different categories of evidence answer different questions.

An ownership inscription may establish the existence of a manuscript at a particular time.

A colophon may claim a copying date.

A watermark may help identify the period in which the paper was manufactured.

These forms of evidence should be evaluated independently before their implications are combined.

7. Textual Variants and the Comparison of Manuscripts

The second major part of our lesson concerned textual criticism.

When several manuscripts preserve the same work, they may contain different readings at corresponding passages.

These differences are known as textual variants.

For example, one manuscript might read “the just sultan,” another “the just sovereign,” while a third preserves only “the sultan.”

Such differences should not automatically be classified as errors.

A variant may result from accidental omission, deliberate correction, regional linguistic adaptation, or authorial revision.

We emphasized that the oldest surviving manuscript is not necessarily the most accurate witness.

A later manuscript may have been copied from an earlier and more reliable exemplar than the one used to produce an older surviving copy.

Accordingly, the evaluation of textual witnesses requires more than a comparison of their dates.

8. Shared Errors and Manuscript Genealogy

We then considered the relationship between shared errors and the reconstruction of manuscript transmission.

Suppose two manuscripts omit the same phrase at the same location.

Does this prove that they descend from a common exemplar?

Not necessarily.

Two scribes may independently omit the same words, especially where similar beginnings or endings make accidental eye-skipping likely.

However, an unusual shared error may provide stronger evidence of a genealogical relationship.

Several independent and distinctive shared errors can strengthen the hypothesis that two manuscripts descend from a common textual ancestor.

This discussion reinforced an essential principle: manuscript genealogy must be reconstructed through patterns of evidence, not through isolated similarities.

The same principle applies to regional spelling differences and linguistic modernization.

A scribe copying an Ottoman Turkish text in another linguistic environment may introduce local vocabulary, orthographic conventions, or grammatical forms.

Such changes are valuable evidence, but they do not automatically establish the geographical location of copying.

9. Marginal Corrections and the Transmission of the Text

Our earlier examination of page 60 of Sittīn al-Basātīn provided a practical example of textual correction.

We observed a relationship between a marker in the main text and a corresponding marker in the margin.

The marginal passage included a Qur’anic phrase from Surah al-Hijr, verse 42:

The matching markers suggest that the marginal passage was intended to be associated with a specific location in the main text.

However, the precise nature of the intervention remains uncertain.

The passage may have been omitted accidentally by the copyist. It may have been missing from an earlier exemplar, or it may represent a later correction.

To distinguish these possibilities, we would need to reconstruct the text before correction and compare the passage with other manuscript witnesses.

We also noted the importance of examining repeated introductory expressions, such as references to God speaking, because they may help explain how an omission occurred.

Nevertheless, a mechanism such as eye-skipping should not be asserted without sufficient textual evidence.

10. A New Research Question: Qur’anic Interpretation and Political Thought

The final part of our session moved beyond dating and textual transmission.

While reading selected passages from folios 5–11 of Sittīn al-Basātīn, we began questioning the broader intellectual purpose of the work.

The passages we examined concerned the virtues of the Qur’an, repentance, divine reward, trust in God, spiritual love, and mystical contemplation.

These sections did not provide clear evidence of direct political criticism.

Yet the absence of explicit political discussion in the opening sections does not establish that political ideas are absent from the work as a whole.

We therefore formulated a new research question:

Could an author or translator employ Qur’anic interpretation to express political, social, ethical, or intellectual concerns arising from the historical circumstances of his own time?

This question becomes particularly significant when a work refers to a contemporary ruler or political event.

In the introduction to Sittīn al-Basātīn, Sultan Mustafa’s second accession to the Ottoman throne is mentioned.

Such a reference invites us to investigate the political circumstances surrounding the production of the Turkish text.

However, a reference to a ruler is not sufficient to classify the entire work as political commentary.

A rigorous investigation must distinguish three levels:

First, the ideas and interpretive framework of the Arabic source.

Second, the interventions, explanations, and possible adaptations introduced by the Turkish translator.

Third, changes introduced by later scribes during manuscript transmission.

The key question is not merely whether political concepts appear in the text, but whether they belong to the Arabic source, the Turkish translator’s historical environment, or later stages of transmission.

This approach may reveal how religious interpretation interacted with the political and social concerns of Ottoman intellectual life.

It may also help us determine whether particular passages represent inherited exegetical traditions or historically specific reinterpretations.

At present, this remains a research hypothesis rather than an established conclusion.

Conclusion

Our eleventh lesson demonstrated that manuscript dating and textual criticism are distinct but closely interconnected fields.

The physical history of a manuscript, the transmission history of its text, and the intellectual intentions of its author must be investigated separately.

Paper, ink, handwriting, colophons, ownership inscriptions, and internal historical references each provide different kinds of evidence.

None should be treated as automatically decisive.

We concluded the lesson with three methodological principles.

First, observations must be distinguished from hypotheses. A visible feature of a manuscript is evidence; an explanation of how or why that feature arose requires further investigation.

Second, historical evidence must be evaluated independently before being combined. Agreement between several sources strengthens a conclusion only when their reliability and possible dependence have been considered.

Third, the physical manuscript, the transmitted text, and the author’s intellectual project represent different historical layers. Understanding a work requires attention to all three.

Our reading of Sittīn al-Basātīn suggests that the manuscript deserves further investigation not only as a witness to Ottoman Turkish language and manuscript culture, but also as a possible source for the study of religious, ethical, mystical, and political thought.

The next stage of research should involve a systematic comparison of the Arabic source, the Turkish translation, and the surviving manuscript witnesses.

Such a comparison may help us understand whether, and to what extent, the interpretation of Qur’anic narratives served as a vehicle for expressing the concerns of a particular historical society.

We concluded Episode 523 and Lesson 11 at this point. The fourth practical exercise—distinguishing scribal interpolation from authorial revision—was reserved for our next lesson.
